Squirrel App Reviews
When Apple awarded this app it was on the alpha stage and the dev was a student. Today this app is by far the best app of its kind and the dev is responsable and costumer service is great. If you are looking for an app for business or accounting go pay $500 dollars on a serious app for those needs. this is an app for everyone who want to keep the numbers on personal budget and home cheking account track. and it is the best on that!
Ive been using Squirrel for several years. Its been a pleasure to see the developer so committed to its continued development. Todays update brings iCloud syncing to the Squirrel platform on OS X and iOS. Its magnificent. You add a transaction to your iPhone…and 4 seconds later…its in your ledger on OS X. This is an app that deserves to be sucessful, and I look forward to using it for many years to come.
I used to use the previous, non-AppStore version, which, albeit limited, worked great. There was a bunch of nice shortcuts to help enter many transactions. For example, it remembered the date of the last entered transaction. So you wouldnt have to enter it manually each time. Also, it would know automatically what category based on the Description (say, once you entered "Trader Joes" with the "Groceries" category, it would switch to that Category automatically everytime you entered "Trader Joes".) These nice little features are gone with the new versions. On top of that, it has refresh problems when entering the amounts, so often time a simple amount like "$53.05" turns out to be recorded as "$53.00". It is disapointing to have to download an update (I just switch to Mountain Lion and the AppStore update was mandatory) to find that the software is worse than it was before. Once these features are back and bugs are fixed, I will happily give it 4-stars.
The addition of some helpful updates make an already excellent Personal Finance Management tool even better. Transactions now update consistently between accounts, and reports are more informative. A great app that keeps getting better!
This app is great for keeping personal finance records. It has improved over the years. However there is a sync problem between the Mac and iOS apps. After used the iOS app for a while, iCloud will stop to sync to the iOS app.
The latest version of Squirrel finally intagrated iCloud. Getting it to work on multiple devices isnt as easy it it should be. After hours of backups, import and exporting csv and qif files I moved my account to my new Mac. Though Im afraid to launch iCloud on the second Mac as the program crashes often. I agree with the previous comment. The developer is hard to reach and only operates via a twitter account and a blog. This updated version changed the graphs so you can no longer adjust the timeframe youre viewing. So you can now only view 3 months of your finincial history at a time. Which is pretty useless when you want ot see the trend for, say 6 months or a year. Having all this data and no way to view it is frustrating. Ill probably abondon Squirrel and look for a more functional better maintained finicianal app.
In a world where all financial services are dealt with online, finance managements are expected to take advantage of this. Without that simple feature, this app is worthless to me.
I’ve been using Squirrel since 2011 and downloaded my original version from the website. Before upgrading I backed up all my information to a .squirrel and a .squirrelbackup file. After I upgraded to 0.9.2 it pulled in an old squirrelbackup file from my home directory automatically. I tried to do a File > Restore Database to grab the correct backup but it gives me an error. I would have lost 3 years worth of transactions if I hadn’t saved the old application on a backup drive. I was able to replace this new 0.9.2 version with my older 0.8.5 version and restore my database. I also tried to export my data to QIF and OFX but the new version just hangs when I try to import that data. — Update 0.9.4 Backed up a database last night. Something went wrong with my transactions so I tried to do a Restore database. Squirrel just opens up blank and wants to “Click here to add your first account” What a piece of garbage. Don’t wait your time ont his app.
I’ve had this and the mobile app for a while now...This app stopped syncing to iCloud and I didn’t know it. It also doesn’t sync to my iPhone app, which has also stopped working properly. Do not purchase. I wasted my money. Disappointed.
Accounts lost
BACK UP before installing the update! It deleted all of my accounts and records.
Yep… I did an update and I lost everything. All accounts, all information, everything. It is painful using this app. I must like pain to keep using using this app.
